How we should respond to...

At some point in our lives we have probably all encountered someone who occasionally puts us down or makes comments to you or others to the effect of "I am better than you". I have wondered at times what causes a person to do this, and most importantly, what is a Godly response? According to Christian psychiatrists when a person feels a need to let you know that they are better than you in some area it is because of insecurity, low self esteem, and emotional issues. Otherwise there would be no need to put you down or convince anyone that they are better. According to psychiatrist these people naturally tend to take on this behavior because when they put other people down then it will hide their own insecurity and make them look better. That explains why it happens. How should we respond to this type of behavior? Matthew 5:39 tells us to turn the other cheek, 1 Corinthians 13 admonishes us to be full of Gods love above all else. Next time someone puts you down the proper response is not to defend yourself or think up a dozen ways that other person displays the exact same thing they are accusing you of (as I have a tendency to do). But the proper response is to smile sweetly and show that person the love of God by treating them kindly.
